IMPORTANT RELEASE - gradual reopening of courthouses
Montreal, June 03, 2020
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Quebec, Ms. Sonia Lebel, announced the gradual resumption of judicial activities from June 1, 2020.
Indeed, during this unprecedented health crisis, the justice system was kept in operation only for cases deemed urgent and access to courthouses was strictly limited. In addition, the deadlines for civil proceedings had been suspended and will continue to be suspended until further notice, that is for as long as the health emergency is renewed by the government.
Of course, this resumption of court activity will be done in compliance with the sanitary measures prescribed by Public Health authorities. Meanwhile, the long awaited digital transformation of justice is expected to take a considerable leap forward in this very exceptional context.
In accordance with the semantics used by the Minister of Justice, the return to normalcy has yet to be realized as our changing Justice system will most likely emerge from this crisis in a different form. It is therefore to be expected that new technological means will be put at the service of litigants and their representatives in the coming weeks.
The various courts of the province of Québec have published plans for the gradual resumption of their activities, the details of which will have to be carefully monitored.
This gradual recovery and the transformation of justice also bring their share of uncertainty and questions for the litigants. During this gradual resumption of judicial activity, the members of our outstanding team are at your disposal to assist you in the progress of your current files in order to ensure their diligent monitoring and continuity but also for any other files you may have, including those that require urgent attention.
You can count on us to monitor the situation closely in order to best defend your interests in this special context.
